<p>Della Au Belatti was born and raised in Mānoa Valley. After graduating as valedictorian of Maryknoll School, she studied American history at Princeton University and became a teacher at Trenton Central High School. <strong>But Della never forgot her Hawai‘i roots, and after graduating, she returned to Hawai‘i to teach at her alma mater.</strong></p><p>In her first year of teaching at Maryknoll, Della challenged her students to answer the question, “What does it mean to participate effectively in a democracy?” In that moment, she knew her calling was to serve.</p>

<p>In 2006, Della was elected to represent Hawai‘i State House District 25. <strong>For nearly 20 years, she has worked tirelessly to protect and expand the rights of the people of Hawai‘i.</strong> As Health Committee Chair and House Majority Leader, she led efforts to pass legislation protecting reproductive health care, fought to strengthen Hawai‘i’s mental health care services, and helped navigate the State through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.<br><br>In addition, she served as Chair of the House Committee on Public Safety and, most recently, championed government transparency as co-convenor of the Good Government Caucus. She helped lead the fight to pass Senate Bill 2471 to stop the influence of dark corporate money on elections so we can undo the damage caused by the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, which has wreaked havoc on our democracy.</p>

HEART of Honolulu kicks off at 11 AM to 4 PM with Nuuanu Avenue shut down and open only for pedestrian traffic.&nbsp; There will be art, live music, food, creative local vendors, performances and more. So come early before we join the parade or stay later to enjoy all of the festivities.</p><p>The parade marks the return of "HeART STRUT, a fun parade of handmade, wearable art, with an 'Inspired by Chinatown' theme!" <strong>Wear your campaign t-shirts (we'll have some there for volunteers who don't have a t-shirt), and bring a FANCY hat to show off. <p>Join us for a FANCY Hat-Making Session in advance of the May 9th HEART of Honolulu Street Festival where we will be strutting our hats &amp; spreading the word about Della's campaign for Congress. <br><br>We'll be serving up a dim sum &amp; manapua lunch, but (if you can) bring a pupu or dessert to share. Also, don't forget to bring your glue guns, scissors, &amp; any especially fancy item (ie. feathers, sequins, mesh, you name it) you may want to add to your hat!</p>
